Please share a memory of Arthurine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary of Arthurine Sims Green On November 14, 1938 Arthurine Sims entered the world. She was born in Dallas, Texas to Arthur and Helen Sims and named after her dad. “Rene” was an only child and the first grandchild born to her paternal grandparents. She was treated like a princess. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized by Rev. Tatum at Antioch Baptist Church. She later joined New Jerusalem Institutional Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her health failed. While at New Jerusalem she worked with the Youth Department. As a teen, Rene worked with the children’s choir and served as their pianist. She was a proud 1957 graduate of Lincoln High and helped to pen the school song. A trailblazer in her own right, Rene was one of the first undergraduate African American students at The University of Texas at Austin. She helped to integrate the university. It was at UT that she met her future husband who was also a trailblazer. Samuel Green Jr. and Arthurine Sims were married on June 23, 1961. To this union were born Samuel Green III and Cynthia Green (Morrison.) Rene’s artsy and creative spirit were exhibited through her ceramic paintings which she often gave as gifts. She retired after 33 years of service to Blue Cross Blue Shield where she was a claims adjuster. She met her friend/sister, Ms. Carolyn McFrazier at BCBS. Rene’s quick wit and sharp tongue entertained many. She definitely “Kept it Real.” She was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Nothing delighted her more than to be surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren who called her Momma Rene. She understood the special relationship of grandparents because she had a special relationship with her grandmother Lobie Sims. Ms. Green willingly shared her love, wisdom, meals and words of encouragement. She was as beautiful inside as she was on the outside. Her big and generous heart touched many. She was preceded in death by her parents: Arthur & Helen Sims; grandparents: Nelvin & Lobie Sims, John & Paralee Comins. She leaves to cherish her memory Son: Samuel Green III (Jannica), Daughter: Cynthia Green Morrison. Grandchildren: LaKeesha Green, Dominic Green, Samantha Green, Laura Morrison, Symone Green, Simon Green and Samuel Morrison. Great-grand’s: Aaliyah Green, Daranique Green, Zariah Green, Paris Tolbert and Mariyah Dabney-Green. She also leaves her aunts: Dorothy Ross, Celester Sims and Ola Comins along with cousins and friends.
